It was an unofficial Puppy Party Friday here at Clay City Elementary! Superintendent Mr. Neubaum brought in some of his puppies and let them visit each elementary class. The students were full of giggles and smiles and the puppies received lots of love. What a great way to wrap up the week!

On February 7th, Mr. Brummer's high school biology class performed an experiment to extract the DNA from a strawberry. They began by smashing strawberries and mixing them with a DNA extraction buffer containing salt to break up protein chains that bind around the nucleic acids, and dish soap to dissolve the lipid (fat) part of the strawberry cell wall and nuclear membrane. After the liquid was filtered from the mixture, cold ethanol was poured into the test tube causing the DNA to separate from the liquid. Students then used a wooden stick to gather as much DNA as they could. Strawberries were used for this experiment because they are octoploids, meaning they have 8 copies of each of their chromosomes. All of that DNA makes them ideal for an experiment like this.
