This past Friday, Mrs. Ahlfield's 3rd grade students were able to learn safety in many different ways at Farm Safety Day sponsored by Clay County Farm Bureau. From how to use a lawn mower properly to a quick lesson on CPR, the students gained a wealth of knowledge on how to stay safe in these situations. They also were able to see what the Jaws Of Life were so that if they ever had to be in that situation, they would be less afraid. The kids had a great day and took away some great information!

On Friday, September 27, Mr. Wattles purchased milkshakes from The Scoop on Main for Mrs. Kuenstler’s 5th grade class. The class started off by writing a persuasive letter to the principal about September 12th being “National Milkshake Day", trying to persuade the school’s principal to serve milkshakes at our school. Mr. Wattles agreed as long as they earned a milkshake. The class decided on working on transitioning between class periods. The class and Mrs. Kuenstler came up with a goal and if the goal was achieved, milkshakes would be served.

When Ms. Walker asked for new lab equipment on an end of the year "wish list" she didn't know what to expect. When teachers left for summer break, there was no assurance that the equipment would be purchased.  But summer is when Beth Hance, Financial Manager at Clay City, went to work facilitating the acquisition of new Vernier lab equipment through grant expenditures over the summer.   Clay City Schools, under the new leadership of Superintendent John Neubaum, actively supports project based, hands-on learning that accompanies robust stem programs like Walker's.  Ms. Walker earned her master's in science education from SIUC where she initially practiced using Vernier probes and became familiar with their power as a learning tool.  Bringing both experience and expertise into the classroom, Walker enjoys seeing students actively engaged in learning opportunities like these in her classroom.  Here 8th grade has been observing chemical reactions and energy transfers in combustion, thermal energy, and chemical energy. Ms. Walker says her students "are excited to start using our new Vernier lab devices and probes to measure and record data in our activities this year."
